Taos Artist Shines in Summer of Love

Contact:  Frederick Aragon (575) 758-4776; aragon@newmex.com

Frederick Aragon is loving the Summer of Love. Already a popular local musician, Aragon recently added to his acting chops with a performance in “Descansos,” an independent film by Santa Fe filmmaker Chris Roybal, which will have its Taos premiere at 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 14, at the Taos Community Auditorium. “Descansos” will be preceded by a screening of Aragon’s animated short film, “Coyote Tales: Mystery’s Night,” a 2008 New Mexico Governor’s Cup/National Geographic All Roads Film Project award winner.

Preceding both films at 5:30 p.m. is an opening reception at Nichols Taos Fine Art Gallery (403 Paseo del Pueblo Norte), which will feature new works by both Aragon and gallery owner Richard Alan Nichols. Admission to the reception and screenings is $30, with proceeds benefiting the Taos County Economic Development Corporation.

Among Aragon’s new visual artworks are hand-carved talking sticks, Native American flutes, and paintings in his Spirit Ponies series.

“Coyote Tales: Mystery’s Night” is based on a song from Aragon’s second CD, “American Native.” It premiered last fall at the Santa Fe Film Festival, along with a live-action film in which Aragon played a pivotal role, “Taos,” which won the Festival’s Tamalewood Award for Best New Mexican Film. “Taos” was recently picked up for distribution by Gaiam’s Spiritual Cinema Circle, a community of conscious filmmakers and film-lovers with DVD distribution in more than 80 countries.

In addition to preparing for the August 14 openings, Aragon is spending much of his time this summer writing and rehearsing material for his as-yet-untitled third CD, as well as practicing for his new stage show, “Coyote Meets Elvis: When Legends Collide,” which will debut at the 2009 Paranormal Symposium in Angel Fire September 11-13.
