| Profile: |
Known as "Sky City," Acoma Pueblo was strategically built on top of a 367' sandstone mesa many hundreds of years ago for effective defense against raiders. It is considered to be the oldest inhabited village in the United States, and both the mission and the pueblo have been designated as Registered National Historic Landmarks. Farming and ranching are the mainstays of the private sector on the reservation. The Acomas are well known for their thin-walled pottery, which can be seen on display at the Sky City Visitor Center. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln, presented to the Pueblo a silver-headed cane to reaffirm the government-to-government relationship. Since then pueblo governors have carried the cane as a symbol of their authority. |
