The Pueblo of San Ildefonso is situated by the Rio Grande, 20 miles (approx.) northwest of Santa Fe. The pueblo extends from the Rio Grande to the upper mountain elevations near Los Alamos. Its Tewa name is "Pokwoghayungwee? which means ?water cuts down through.? San Ildefonso is famous for its black-on- black burnished and matte pottery.
