The most scenic and northern most of the 19 pueblos in New Mexico, Taos Pueblo, also known as the place of the Red Willows, is located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. UNESCO inscribed the multi-storied adobe village on the world heritage list in 1992 as "One of the oldest continuously inhabited communites in North America." Taos pueblo is also representative of the great pueblo cultures of the Southwest. It is known to have inspired Pueblo-Style archchitecture as well as the establishment of the historic artist colony in the nearby town of Taos from which southwestern art originated. |
