Hatch "The Chile Capitol of the World" is a farm and ranch community, noted for its bountiful chile harvest. The following information is from "The Place Names of New Mexico" by Robert Julyan; Revised Edition, University of New Mexico Press Situated at the junction of NM 185, 187, 26, and 154, 33 mi NW of Las Cruces. Hatch originally was settled as Santa Barbara in 1851, but Apache raids drove the settlers away until the establishment of Fort Thorn in 1853. Hatch was named in honor of Gen. Edward Hatch, who had been the commander of Fort Thorn in 1875. |
