Once the center of uranium mining production (discovered in 1950), Grants is located in the high-desert mesa country sandwiched between Mount Taylor (north) and the desolate Malpais (south) giving it one of the most diverse landscapes in the state. The NM Mining Museum is the only underground uranium mine museum in the world. The area is known for its extinct volcano lava flows, natural ice caves, and spectacular rock formations.
