In the early 1900s, Magdalena was one of the largest railroad shipping points for wool and cattle in the United States. Today, ranching and retail trades are the mainstays of Magdalena?s economy. The U.S. Forest Service, which established a headquarters there in 1910, is the town?s oldest continuous employer and still cares for much of the mountain and ranch land in the area.
