Production: Albert Camus’ Caligula

Production Company: Flower Pictures
Director: Ethan Zell
Dates: Summer 2024 — Dates To Be Determined
Location: Albuquerque, NM

About: When his sister Drusilla dies, Caligula is thrown into a crisis. The world is not what he thought it was, and for all his power as Emperor of Rome, he cannot change the fact that "men die and they are not happy.” He roams the countryside by himself for three days trying to come to grips with the repugnant knowledge of his own powerlessness. When he returns to the place, he is a changed man. He now believes that the only way to experience true freedom is to attain the impossible: "to drown the sky in the sea, to infuse ugliness with beauty, to wring a laugh from pain." He does not care that in trying to grasp this impossible freedom he will have to sacrifice friendship, honor, justice, and love.
Caligula, the boy-emperor has become Caligula, the monster.

Information: We are casting for an independent short film project. We will be filming a scene from Albert Camus’ script of Caligula in which Emperor Caligula goes mad. PAID OPPORTUNITY.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

RUSTY: 28-36 years old, all ethnicities man. Rusty (32) is a convenience store clerk, quiet and somewhat of a sage. He’s lived in town all his life, knows all the people and all the stories, but is wise enough to never let on that he does.

32YO FREDDY OTERO: 28-36 years old, Hispanic man. An emerging baseball star who threw his arm out in college, Freddy Otero (32) has since grown up, though he is still quiet and focused. Tonight, Freddy Otero is just a guy who happens to be buying a twelve-pack… which is how you can tell Freddy's just came from dropping his kids at his ex-wife’s house.

GUNMAN: 28-36 years old, white man. The Gunman (30-35) has been on roll, pulling off a successful string of convenience store robberies for the past month. He looks just like Pete Barber–well, Pete Barber in an N95 mask–the same wild hair, same thick glasses. He carries a silver semi-automatic pistol that looks like the silver cap gun that Pete stole from Eric back in 7th grade.

32YO PETE BARBER: 28-36 years old, white man. Everything always came easy to Pete Barber (32) – or it used to before he lost the big game and those baseball scholarships went away. These days Pete’s just cashing government checks, spending money on tattoos, not working a lick–claiming he was legally blind and getting chauffeured by his mom.

32YO JIMMY: 28-36 years old, all ethnicities man. Jimmy (32) grew up with Pete and Freddy. He and Pete were close from kindergarten through most of high school. Sometimes they run into each other now and again, but even though Jimmy still lives in Caldera, he hasn’t really hung out with Pete since senior year.

32YO BART: 28-36 years old, Hispanic man. Bart (32) is a friend of Freddy’s. They knew each other in high school, but actually got closer to each other after graduation, since they both stayed around, working on construction jobs together.

TEENAGE FREDDY OTERO: 18-22 years old to look younger, Hispanic man. Patient and focused, Freddy Otero (18 to look younger) is the big hitter, the star of the Rio Palomas baseball team. NCAA scouts regularly attend his games and there are rumors of sweet college scholarships on the horizon.

TEENAGE PETE BARBER: 18-22 years old to look younger, white man. Pete Barber (18 to look younger) is Caldera’s star pitcher–and likes to imagine he’s the best at everything else outside of baseball as well. He and Freddy Otero used to play ball together before Freddy moved to Rio Paloma. Courted by NCAA scouts, Pete is looking forward to college girls and the major leagues.

12YO FREDDY OTERO: 10-14 years old, Hispanic boy. Freddy Otero is an extremely talented baseball player–even at 12–and he knows it. He’s not as cool as Pete, and he can be a bit of a show off, but at least his older brother buys kids beer. PLEASE NOTE: In Scene 4, Freddy cracks it open a beer and hands it to another kid. (Soda will be used for prop beer.)

12YO PETE BARBER: 10-14 years old, white boy. Despite wild hair and thick glasses, or maybe because of it, Pete Barber (12) gets what he wants and makes it look easy. He’s the best–at getting out of trouble, at talking to girls, some might even say he’s a better player than Freddy Otero. PLEASE NOTE: In scene 4, 12-Year-Old Pete has his shoulder rubbed by a Middle School Masseuse and is present while Jimmy has a beer. (Soda will be used for prop beer.) In Scene 6, Pete and his friends reenact a scene from the movie ‘Narc,’ which involves–their middle school version of–gun violence.

12YO JIMMY: 10-14 years old, all ethnicities boy. Most kids would say, “Jimmy is cool.” Kind and agreeable, he’s a decent athlete, and a great guy to have on your team. Jimmy (12) hangs out with Pete and Freddy and is friendly with most everyone, even adults. PLEASE NOTE: In scene 4, 12-Year-Old Jimmy has a beer and has his shoulder rubbed by a Middle School Masseuse. (Soda will be used for prop beer.) In Scene 6, Jimmy and his friends reenact a scene from the movie ‘Narc,’ which involves–their middle school version of–gun violence.

12YO ERIC: 10-14 years old, Hispanic or white boy. Small for his age, Eric is an only child and eager to please. Eric lends Pete a nice silver cap gun and never gets it back.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MASSEUSES #1, 2, & 3: 10-14 years old, all ethnicities girl. Friends since elementary school, good looking without being slutty, and popular without lording it over the masses, this clique of girls is tight. If you don't like them, you’re just jealous. PLEASE NOTE: In scene 4, the Middle School Masseuses are present while 12-Year-Old Jimmy has a beer. (Soda will be used for prop beer.) One of them rubs Jimmy’s hurt shoulder and another rubs Pete’s shoulders. In Scene 6, they help Pete and Jimmy reenact a scene from the movie ‘Narc,’ which involves–their very middle school version of–gun violence.
