CHARACTER BRIEFS (ballet experience required) :
- ARLO (early 20’s, gender non-conforming, Latine/x) An androgynous up-and-comer in the local Albuquerque ballet troupe, Arlo, is the soul of the film—someone who stands for a renewed perception of gender in the ballet industry and is led by their fearlessness and curiosity. Arlo has a day-job in a kitchen, and dreams of the world outside of Albuquerque. Must be an an advanced ballet dancer. Note, there are partial-nudity (non-intimate) and intimate (non-nude) scenes (two) . All nudity will be handled professionally, following standard intimacy coordination and consent protocols.
- ELISE (late 30’s, Female, Latine/x) The well-known, long-standing principal dancer in the Albuquerque troupe. Elise is level-headed and self-assured as she approaches a part in her career where she is battling the physical demands of ballet and considering retirement. Elise also believes in the allure that Albuquerque has, and has resided in the city her entire life; she is Burqueña through and through. Must be an advanced ballet dancer.
- DEAN (late 30’s-early 40’s, Male, Black) The assistant to Gideon. He fulfills the movement-based trials for their ballet works as Gideon doesn’t dance anymore. Dean has been the only person to assist in Gideon’s works, and thus is Gideon’s closest confidant and like a little brother. Must be an advanced ballet dancer.
CHARACTER BRIEFS (ballet experience NOT required)
- GIDEON (late 30’s-mid 40’s, Male, Black) A famous contemporary ballet composer-choreographer who is working with a local troupe in New Mexico in efforts to write something fresh after leaving his home of New York City behind. He is calloused from working in the industry, and carries a weight with him that he wears on his sleeve around the Albuquerque troupe. Piano experience strongly preferred.
-LOTTIE (late 40’s, Female, Latine/x) The artistic director of the Albuquerque ballet troupe and owner of the dance studio they work out of. Lottie took Elise under her wing when Elise was a young dancer and has become a motherly figure to her. Lottie serves as a guiding voice for Elise, especially regarding aging as a Latin woman in the ballet industry.
-LUCERO (mid-late 20’s, Male, Latine/x) Arlo’s coworker and love interest, Lucero is a rugged cook at the restaurant Arlo works at, and an understanding force in Arlo’s life. Lucero and Arlo meditate on their place in the world, and what it means to be young and ambitious in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
