No acting background is required as this film will be all improvised acting and will be a hybrid of both documentary and narrative forms.
LOGLINE: In a forgotten New Mexican desert town, ten intersecting lives collide as locals pin their hopes on a presidential whistle-stop train to revive their fading community. This film will be directed by an award winning director duo who have screened films at Sundance, Berlinale, SXSW, and Venice Film Festival.
Information: ROLES
ROLES:
ANGEL
FEMALE - 30s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* MUST HAVE SINGING EXPERIENCE
Angel is a woman clinging to faded dreams, making ends meet at the diner and leading karaoke nights as a brief escape from a life that never quite lived up to its promise. Now in her mid-thirties and living with the Cop, she’s trapped in a relationship that has grown cold. As the cracks in their life deepen, Angel reaches a breaking point, yearning for the freedom and self-worth she’s denied herself for far too long.
BONES
MALE - 40s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* MOTORCYCLE EXPERIENCE A PLUS
Bones, a middle-aged outlaw with a checkered past, is both feared and beloved in Edge City, haunted by regrets and the unfulfilled promise of his youth. A local legend known for his dark humor and rebellious spirit, he remains fiercely loyal to his daughter Rose. His love-hate relationship with the Cop, his childhood friend turned nemesis, embodies the tension between his desire for freedom and his fear of fading into obscurity.
COP
MALE - 40s
WHITE
The Cop is a pill-popping, heartbroken man, hiding behind a perfect fence and a brittle sense of duty. Surrounded by symbols of Jesus and the American Dream, he listens to Joel Osteen in his cruiser, clinging to a fading patriotism as his personal life unravels. Struggling to connect with his estranged daughter Irene and his girlfriend Angel, his only real link is with Bones, his childhood friend turned nemesis—yet even that bond is strained by years of unresolved conflict and regret.
DRIFTER
MALE - mid-20s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* SERVICE EXPERIENCE A PLUS
The Drifter is a rugged, introspective young man drawn to Edge City, in search of temporary work promised by the spectacle of the presidential whistle-stop train. Captivated by the town’s quiet beauty and Rose’s resilience, he briefly entertains the idea of staying, but his restless need for the open road—the only constant in his life—soon pulls him away. His journey is defined by a perpetual search for meaning, always moving, but never truly finding his place.
HARLAN
MALE - 70s
ANY RACE
* MONOLOGUE DELIVERY A MUST
Harlan is a reclusive older man, living in solitude on the outskirts of Edge City, haunted by the loss of his son and the fading promise of a better life. With a weathered face and piercing eyes, he’s the ghostly embodiment of a town—and an America—that might have been. Though a stoic, enigmatic figure to most, he forms an unexpected bond with Irene, stirring the last echoes of connection in his otherwise isolated existence.
THE KING
MALE - 50s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* BIG PERSONALITY
The King is a man whose presence is impossible to ignore—big, loud, slovenly, and eccentric, he’s the self-appointed royalty of the town, wielding his prosthetic hand like a scepter and following a regal code that only he truly understands. Alongside his loyal sidekick Carl, he’s the life of the party and often the butt of the joke, his clownish bravado masking a cynic’s heart of gold and a hidden air of tragic dignity. Together, the King and Carl embody the strange charm and messy beauty of friendship, infusing the town’s daily life with laughter, absurdity, and a touch of wisdom.
NONNIE
FEMALE - late-70s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* MONOLOGUE DELIVERY ESSENTIAL
Nonnie is the formidable matriarch of the town, her strength forged through decades of hard-earned survival and sacrifice. Now in her early eighties, she runs the local motel with a no-nonsense attitude, concealing her declining health behind an elegant appearance and sharp wit. While she commands respect at the bar, she quietly grapples with her complicated bond with her son, Bones, and offers fierce, protective guidance to her granddaughter Rose and young Irene, for whom her empathy runs deep.
ROSE
FEMALE - mid-20s
LATINO / HISPANIC / NATIVE
* SERVICE EXPERIENCE A PLUS
Rose is a sharp-witted, resilient young woman in her early twenties, shaped by the harsh realities of her upbringing under her outlaw father, Bones, and her tough but loving grandmother, Nonnie. With a rebellious independence and an unshakable sense of duty, she juggles multiple jobs at the motel, diner, and bar, acting as a protective big sister to Irene. Beneath her quiet determination and guarded exterior, Rose dreams of escaping her small town, though she’s tethered by loyalty to those who rely on her.
