How to List Your Property
The New Mexico Film Office continually searches for new locations to add to our online location database. If you are interested in having your New Mexico home, business, ranch, or property listed as a potential location to film, television and commercial productions, please read below. It’s free and easy. Please keep in mind that not all properties will be listed with our office, and the New Mexico Film Office will make that determination. Using a digital camera, create a Digital Photo File of your property following the guidelines below. Please see the TIPS section before you begin to take photographs.
- Begin with the outside of your property
- Take a wide shot of your street (whichever direction is the most interesting), making sure the property is included in the picture
- Take a wide shot of the front of the property
- Take a wide shot of the back of the property
- Take shots of additional or unique features such as a barn, swimming pool, guesthouse, etc.
- Shoot 3 or 4 main rooms inside the property (living room, kitchen, great room, master suite), one or two shots per room
Do not send slide shows, brochures, or photos grouped in a series. Only individual photos attached to your submittal will be accepted. Ideally the width of a photo should be between 8 and 13 inches and the resolution at least 144. This is the format we use. Include the name of the photographer who took the photos.
- Detailed shots such as doors or fixtures are not necessary.
- Do not take excessive pictures. One shot per view is sufficient.
- Be sure to title each file accordingly (i.e. Smith Front Yard, Smith Kitchen, Smith Bathroom).
- Photos should be in JPEG format, medium resolution, and not exceed 500 KB per photo.
- Collectively, your Digital Photo File should not exceed 8 MB (8 – 12 photos per property are preferred.)
- If you have multiple properties, please send one Digital Photo File per property.
- In your submittal, include the following nine (9) pieces of information. (Please note that the public will not be able to view any private information.):
- Your full name
- The address of your property
- Your contact information
- Verify property ownership
- Square footage/specs of buildings on property and number of acres
- Directions from the nearest large town
- Indicate any distinctive surroundings or features. For instance, note if there are train tracks in your backyard, an airport nearby, and/or a highway in close proximity (anything that could create uncontrollable noise).
- Confirm that there is sufficient parking and access for large vehicles available on or near the property
- Indicate which types of productions you’re willing to allow (film and television projects can have a crew of 100 to 200 people, whereas smaller productions such as commercials usually have 30 – 40)
What Happens Next?
If a production company is interested in your property, initial contact is generally made by a location scout or location manager hired by the production company. If your property is chosen, this person will be your contact during the duration of the shoot. You may call the New Mexico Film Office 505-476-5600 to check the credentials of the scout and/or the project. All negotiations for filming use, rates, and so forth will be between the production company and the property owner, not the New Mexico Film Office. So Now You Are Ready To List Your Property
To list your property and upload Digital Photos: click here. By submitting your property information and by uploading photos to the New Mexico Film Office, you agree to the following: List Your Property Release:
- You give the right of the State of New Mexico represented by the New Mexico State Film Office (NMFO), a division of the Economic Development Department, through its employees, representatives, licensees and successors, permission to reproduce and publicly display the digital photographs of the property (hereafter referred to as the “Photographs”), submitted with the understanding that the NMFO, its employees, representatives, licensees and successors may use, display and distribute these submitted Photographs in any and all media of any nature whatsoever, where now known or hereafter devised, including the NMFO’s searchable locations database (hereafter referred to as the ‘Photo Library”), for the sole purpose of promoting and advertising the property, and all structures represented on the property, which is the subject of the Photographs as a possible location for film and multimedia productions, including but not limited to feature films, independent films, documentaries, commercials, and television projects.
- Subject to section 5(a) of this release and consent contract, you must submit the following contact information: address of property; your name and your contact number; and, the name and contact number of this Property owner if you are not the owner.
- You give the permission that the contact information submitted to the NMFO, in accordance to section 2 of this release and consent contract, may be given to motion picture and television industry representatives and NMFO employees, agents and representatives to utilize.
- You give the permission that the address information submitted to the NMFO in accordance to section 2 of this release and consent contract may be displayed alongside the Photographs in the Photo Library to motion picture and television industry representatives and NMFO employees, agents and representatives.
- You agree that you may not submit the contact information of the Photographs to the NMFO unless:
- You are the owner of the property as represented in the Photographs; or, if you are not the owner, the owner has previously provided prior written consent to the NMFO for you to submit the contact information and the photographs to the NMFO in accordance with this release and consent contract; and The contact information you provide is true and correct at the time you submit the contact information to the NMFO; and,
- You are fully authorized to enter into this release and consent contract; and,
- You have the right to grant to the NMFO all the rights granted in this release and consent contract.
- You agree to indemnify the NMFO against all claims, costs, charges, damages, and expenses that may arise against or be incurred by the NMFO as a result of your submission of the Photographs and the contact information to the NMFO.
- You release and forever discharge the NMFO, its employees, representatives, successors and licensees from any claims, obligations, or liability of any and every kind arising in any way out of your submission of the Photographs or contact information to the NMFO.
- You acknowledge and you fully understand that the NMFO will act in reliance on this release and consent contract.
Recommended Guidelines for Interacting with a Production Company:
- Initial contact is generally made by a location scout or location manager, who is hired locally by the film company. This person will be your contact during the duration of the shoot. Call the New Mexico Film Office 505-476-5600 to check the credentials of the scout and/or the project.
- Agree upon the exact number of days required for the shoot plus preparation and wrap time. (A shooting day is approximately 14 hours long.)
- Arrange for a walk-through with the location manager to determine exact interiors desired for filming; where equipment and vehicles will need to be positioned or parked; any off-limits areas specified by the owner; and any areas such as roof, trees, fences, windows, which may need to be used or altered during filming.
- Decide which personal property of the owners may be used for filming, how and where to store items not used, and who will be responsible for packing and moving.
- Determine who will be allowed on set during period of use.
- Set rules regarding: smoking, use of washrooms, laundry, water, electricity, kitchen, protective floor coverings, trash, etc.
- Establish guidelines for production company’s use of owner’s phone.
- Location manager must inform the owner where cast and crew will be eating their meals.
- Decide how the owner will be accommodated during filming and any living expenses that may be required.
- Set vehicle parking area for cast and crew.
- Find out the nature of the project and how your location will be used. Will there be special effects like smoke, fire, gunshots?
- Establish clean-up requirements, who is responsible and when it is to be completed (within 24-48 hours), and arrange with location manager for final walk-through for the owner’s approval.
- Location fees are negotiable. The owner should feel comfortable with the amount agreed upon, and a payment schedule should be established prior to any filming.
- Owner may request and negotiate a security/damage deposit.
- Owner should have a written agreement detailing specifics and may wish to add the following: The applicant (film company) agrees to indemnify (insure) owner and to be solely and absolutely liable upon any and all claims, suits and judgments against the owner and/or the applicant for personal injuries and property damages arising out of or occurring during the activities of the applicant, his (its) employees or otherwise. This agreement may be revoked at any time. This contract should be signed by a principal agent of the production company.
