Jenn Garcia is always willing to learn.
The Albuquerque-based producer and production manager was one of six filmmakers nationwide – and the sole New Mexican - to participate in the Warner Bros. Discovery Access x HBO Production Management Program, which is an initiative designed to develop the next generation of film and television line producers.
Garcia, originally from Roswell, was the only filmmaker in the group with a background rooted primarily in independent film production.
Garcia has spent the past nine years producing and production managing feature films, commercials, and independent projects across the Southwest. Her credits include “National Anthem,” “Frybread Face and Me,” and “Pozole.” She also served as Assistant Production Coordinator on the New Mexico units of “The Smashing Machine” and “Preparation for the Next Life.”
She participated in a five-day, in-person intensive in Los Angeles that included in depth discussions with HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery executives, personal growth workshops, and a networking dinner.
While the program was done last fall, Garcia said there is continuing programming she has been a part of in recent months.
“There’s ongoing support and mentorship that is constant,” she said. “Being connected to different execs and how they move forward in the times of less production is something to be seen.”
While the event brought her closer to those making decisions, she was encouraged by an HBO production planner’s workshop which gave her an idea of how productions choose New Mexico.
“It’s based off production numbers and he did say New Mexico is top of mind,” she said. “This is encouraging because the state industry can handle all types of productions.”
Garcia also knows that the film industry is about making those connections and letting them grow until ready.
“I recently got a job because I worked with someone seven years ago,” she said. “It took until 2026 to have this mainifest. We have to continue to continue to take those steps.”
