NMFO: Melissa, thanks for joining us. Tell us about your journey as an actress in New Mexico.

MC: I returned to New Mexico in 2009 after studying at the National Conservatory for Dramatic Arts and briefly attending the American Academy. I went to NMSU and then left to pursue acting, but a car accident affected my self-confidence. I worked in theater and radio before returning to New Mexico.

Reconnecting with my former professor, Mark Medoff, led to my first film role. I got cast in a short film, then a movie, and I was hooked! I moved to Santa Fe, got cast in "Godless," and have been working steadily ever since.

NMFO: What are the challenges and rewards of acting in New Mexico?

MC: One challenge is that many productions cast major roles elsewhere before coming to New Mexico. However, the casting directors here are fantastic. They advocate for local actors and sometimes even suggest roles written for different genders. It's a close-knit community, and talented actors can stand out.

NMFO: What have been some of your favorite projects?

MC: "Opus" is my favorite recent project. I also loved working on "Big Sky" and "Graves." Recurring roles allow you to develop a character and build relationships with the crew.

NMFO: How did you get involved with "Opus"?

MC: It was a typical audition process. The role resonated with me, and I felt confident. I had a funny experience at the callback where I accidentally took the casting assistant's phone! When I returned it, they told me I got the part.

NMFO: What was it like working with the cast and crew on "Opus"?

MC: It was amazing! I had a memorable first day with John Malkovich. We bonded over a shared love of theater, and it was a special moment.

NMFO: What advice would you give aspiring actors in New Mexico?

MC: Take classes, especially improv. Practice auditioning and find other actors to work with. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

New Mexico Film Office: How do you deal with rejection?

MC: It's tough, but I've learned not to take it personally. Often, it comes down to factors beyond your control. I try to have a spiritual approach and believe that the right roles will come my way.

NMFO: How has the film industry impacted New Mexico?

MC: The film industry provides great jobs and brings talented people to our state. It also showcases New Mexico's beauty and culture.

New Mexico Film Office: How can people connect with you?
