Desert Cult Thriller Filming in Las Cruces, Utilizing NM Rural Uplift
SANTA FE - The feature film “Godmother” is in principal photography in Las Cruces, utilizing the distinct high-desert landscapes of southern New Mexico. Directed by John Veron and produced by Craig Sherwood, the film stars Dee Wallace, Bruce Davison, Paige Evans, Riley Dandy, and Cameron Cuffe.
The story follows Theo, an upwardly mobile young millennial whose weekend trip to Joshua Tree, California, with her sister and boyfriend turns into a nightmare when they’re forced to succumb to the whims of the Martinsons, a too-friendly older couple.
The script was written by Veron and popular video game writer Alanah Pearce, and is being executive produced by content creator Jacksepticeye, who has over 40 million subscribers.
The production is committed to filming through December and strategically utilizes the 10% Rural Uplift incentive to invest directly in the regional economy. The film is hiring over 24 New Mexicans for crew and talent positions, providing valuable work opportunities for the growing film industry in southern New Mexico.
“The psychological and visual contrast of this story requires a truly versatile and isolated location,” said Steve Graham, director of the New Mexico Film Office. “We are delighted that this production chose Las Cruces. This project maximizes the 10% Rural Uplift. It highlights the fact that New Mexico's incentives support not only big dramas but also the most unique, high-concept genre films being made today, creating jobs for over two dozen of our skilled residents.”
"We are very excited to have ‘Godmother’ here, especially since they are using so much of our skilled local crew,” Las Cruces Film Liaison Andrew Jara stated. “It goes to show that Las Cruces has everything that a production would need from experienced crew to diverse locations to great weather!"
