Feature film ‘The Shepherd’ begins production in southern New Mexico, employing more than 70 local crew members

Production brings jobs and economic activity to southern New Mexico’s film industry

SANTA FE — The feature film “The Shepherd” has started principal photography in and around Las Cruces, continuing through December, and employing over 70 New Mexicans in various crew and talent roles.

Directed by John Hyams (“Alone”) and produced by Paperclip Ltd., “The Shepherd” centers on a desperate young woman, played by Georgina Campbell (“Barbarian”), who is on the run from her ex. She hitches a ride through the desert with a frightening stranger, only to realize he is on a destructive mission targeting the mysterious cargo in the backseat. The film also stars David Dastmalchian, known for his performance in “Late Night with the Devil.”

“Once I turned the first few pages of ‘The Shepherd,’ I was hooked,” said Dastmalchian. “I immediately wanted to see this high-octane, horrifying world brought to life, and John is the perfect person to make it happen. After collaborating with Roy and Steven on ‘Late Night with the Devil,’ I have been looking forward to getting back in the sandbox with them, and I can’t wait to bring the genre force of Good Fiend Films into the equation.”

The production represents a meaningful investment in southern New Mexico, hiring more than 70 New Mexicans and supporting local businesses across the Las Cruces region.
