New Mexico Film Office Announces, “Dark Winds” Season 2 Begins Filming

Santa Fe, NM - New Mexico Film Office Director, Amber Dodson announces the series “Dark Winds” began principal photography in November and will continue through 2023 in and around Santa Fe and Tesuque Pueblo.

Directed by Chris Eyre ("Dark Winds"), produced by Robert Redford (“The Mustang”), George R.R. Martin (“Game of Thrones”), and Vince Calandra (“Sharp”), and starring Zahn McClarnon (“The Son”). “Dark Winds” is based on the iconic book series, “Iconic Leaphorn & Chee,” by Tony Hillerman. Set in the 1970s on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation, “Dark Winds” tells the story of Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Deputy Chee as they uncover crimes and mysteries, not only in work, but also within themselves.

The Hollywood Reporter has declared “Dark Winds,” “Perhaps the most ambitious Native-led TV show ever made.” “This once-in-a-lifetime creative team and cast have delivered something truly special with ‘Dark Winds,’” Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, said. “We can’t wait to share the rest of this thrill ride of a first season with the fans and follow Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee into a second season on AMC and AMC+ next year.

The production will employ 200 New Mexico crew members, 90 background/extras, and 60 New Mexico principal actors.
