A Story by Students: Short Film Wraps in Albuquerque, Focused on Youth Wellness and Self-Regulation
SANTA FE - The wrap of principal photography for the short film “Stay True” in Albuquerque. This production utilized a unique collaborative process in which the story was designed by at-risk youth alongside the filmmakers, turning a creative project into a valuable tool for social-emotional learning.
The film tells the story of Mariana (Amalia Gallegos) and Jake (Brody Howard), who forge a new friendship in detention. Their connection leads them through a series of adventures that test the boundaries of self-control. The cast also features local actors Evan Arellano, Shaelyn Guzman, Keith Allen, Mischa Dewalt, Lydia Jones, Jeff Dolecek, and Dane Rogerson.
John K.D. Graham (Switched) directed the project, and it was produced by Lava Khonsuwon (History Channel's: History's Greatest Mysteries) and employed approximately 20 New Mexicans, injecting economic activity into the local film community while serving a crucial educational purpose.
The heart of this production lies in its mission to offer constructive guidance to youth facing difficult circumstances.
"This film will help New Mexico youth learn to self-regulate in healthy ways, rather than rely on drugs or alcohol," John K. D. Graham stated, emphasizing the film's intended social impact.
This unique partnership demonstrates how the power of cinematic storytelling can be harnessed for community wellness.
"We are incredibly proud to support films that are conceived by and directly benefit New Mexico's youth," said Steve Graham, director of the New Mexico Film Office. "This project is a perfect example of how film production can transcend entertainment to become a genuine vehicle for workforce training and community mentorship, addressing complex issues with local solutions."
