Dark comedy thriller highlights diverse landscapes and people of Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, NM — The feature film and dark comedy thriller, “A Better Place,” completed production in May, incorporating many local businesses and crew members, in and around Las Cruces.

Las Cruces remains an attractive option for filmmakers, with local talent, diverse landscapes, and the advantage of the state’s 10% rural film tax credit uplift.

"The producers on this project were able to strategically use the compelling locations in Southern New Mexico while directly bringing jobs and developing and using our talented local film workforce,” said New Mexico Film Office Director Steve Graham.

“We are very excited to bring our story to life in Las Cruces,” said Producer Diana Hull (“Land of Bad”). “It’s exciting to work with the amazing talent that New Mexico offers and bring this story to life with them.”

Other producers include Wes Hull (“Land of Bad”), Erlingur Jack Gudmundsson (“The Northman”), Jason Armstrong (“A Mouthful of Air”), Theo Rossi (“Play Dirty”), and Anton Sigurdsson (“Refuge”), and was written and directed by Sigurdsson. The film stars Rossi (“The Penguin”), Billy Campbell (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”), and Rosaline Albay (“The Diplomat”).

The film centers on a disgraced deputy and his partners who are involved in a cover-up that spirals into a chaotic web of paranoia, greed, and buried secrets.

Las Cruces Film Liaison Andrew Jara says Las Cruces, with its diverse landscapes, makes for a superb location for this genre that includes comedy, mystery, and thriller elements, and helps bring film opportunities for local crew. “Las Cruces is the perfect place to shoot a production like this one,” said Jara. “And they were able to use local businesses and help us continue to bring jobs and experience to our area’s eager crew members.”

The production employed more than 100 New Mexico residents, including 40 resident crew members, 27 principal talent, and more than 30 background talent, demonstrating the significant economic impact of filming in Southern New Mexico.
